Intern Teachers May Miss TSC July Salary Increment

The TSC states that instructors hired this year in February for internship terms will not receive pay hikes in July.
The teacher’s contract prevents a compensation increase. Intern teachers at primary and junior secondary schools receive 15,000 and 20,000 Shillings, respectively.
Permanent TSC instructors who are pension-eligible must get an annual pay increase. This shows commission personnel receive annual raises.
Not all TSC permanent, pensionable teachers receive annual pay increases. The teacher’s employer denied the union’s claim that the annual increment was terminated.
TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia said the 2015 Code of Regulations for Teachers, which sets annual compensation increases for all teachers, will remain in effect.
Section 84 of the Code of Regulations for instructors requires the commission to provide instructors annual raises until they meet the highest occupational group pay criterion.
TSC must also pay new teachers based on their grades.
The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has urged the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and SRC to comply with teacher remuneration increments by July 2023.
KUPPET secretary general Akelo Misori believes that high taxes and a high cost of living burden teachers despite the government’s promise to enhance salaries.

“KUPPET demands immediate action by SRC and TSC to complete the teacher salary increment that has already been agreed upon between the union and the President,” Misori said.
Despite guarantees, TSC and SRC continue in circles while teachers pay more taxes and inflation. He added.
Misori spoke during KUPPET’s Nairobi headquarters news conference on July 18. President William Ruto hosted a May union National Governing Council meeting. After the Finance Bill passed, he reiterated the government’s vow to raise teachers’ salary by at least 10%.
