TSC deploys more than 4,000 head teachers following interviews for promotions

More than 4,000 head teachers have been deployed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) after undergoing promotion interviews.

The TSC strategically reshuffled the leadership of over 4,000 primary schools just before the start of the new academic term in January. The headteachers who were affected by these changes have received transfer letters instructing them to report promptly to their new assignments through the Sub-county Directors.

This significant reconfiguration took place shortly after the release of the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam results, less than a week after the completion of the TSC’s primary school teacher promotion interviews. These interviews began on December 4th, 2023, and concluded on December 15th of the same year.

The Commission faced a notable challenge due to a large number of school heads retiring from their positions. It is expected that approximately 2,000 school heads will have retired by December of the current year. In response, the Commission opened job vacancies in September, aiming to promote 36,505 primary and secondary school educators.

The promotion interviews were conducted for primary school teachers in job groups C1 through C4. C1 instructors competed for 10,819 Senior Teacher II (C2) positions in ordinary schools and an additional 700 positions in special schools. The Commission specified the required documentation for these interviews, including national ID cards, academic and professional certificates, appointment letters, subject results, and performance appraisal reports.

Around 100,000 primary and secondary school teachers were shortlisted and invited for interviews to contend for the available 36,505 positions. Secondary school teacher interviews are scheduled to take place from January 3 to January 16, 2024. In regular primary schools, C2 instructors are competing for 3,040 Senior Teacher I (C3) slots, while 346 slots are allocated for special schools.

The competition increases as C3 teachers aim for the 1,930 Deputy Headteacher II (C4) positions in ordinary primary schools. Deputy Headteachers in C4 are also actively competing for 1,049 Headteacher positions in C5 for regular primary schools and an additional 30 positions in special schools.

This round of interviews is significant as it involves a record number of teachers shortlisted for promotion by the TSC and also marks the first time sub-counties have conducted interviews of this nature for school directors seeking advancement. The leadership changes aim to optimize the education system by ensuring a competent and well-distributed teaching workforce in primary schools.
